The town is the ancient capital of the county of Charolais and has Celtic origins. The tower is all that remains of the castle. The town is surrounded by two rivers and there are about 30 bridges and footbridges most of which are decorated with flowers, which makes it very pleasant to stroll around. The bridges and rivers here have earned it the name ‘The Venice of the Charollais’. Renowned for its famous beef, Charolles connoisseurs also rate highly the local poultry dishes and the delicious goat cheeses which were granted their own ‘Charolles’ AOC, the quality label which guarantees the origin of wine and food products. The town is also famous as a historic centre for the production of pottery, which is still produced today.
